HEAIDS Message for World AIDS Day 2016
The Higher Education & Training HIV/AIDS Programme (HEAIDS) joins the country in support of the World AIDS Day 2016 theme that says: “It is in our hands to end HIV and TB”. We advocate that it is the priority of every young man and woman to look after their health. We believe that the educated youth of South Africa have the power to become change agents and help end HIV and AIDS in South Africa.
On this International World AIDS day we wish to encourage young people to get tested. It has been proven that early detection saves lives. We appeal to all South Africans to join our community and be part of the #Genendit.
We take pride as HEAIDS, in our commitment to champion the First things first campaign, a national collaboration focused on advancing health education and awareness of HIV, STIs, TB and other related health and social conditions which affect the progress of young people in all spheres of their lives. Our peer education model is linked to and gives realization to HEAIDS’ core mandate to educate.
It promotes peer to peer led interventions and is carried out throughout all University and college campuses in South Africa. We have also introduced a Curriculum Integration programme for Life Orientation at TVET Colleges and our Future Beats programme uses the medium of campus and community radio to address HIV and related social drivers of the pandemic. We aim to be innovative and responsive to the needs of the young people in our sector and across the country.
